What I’m learning about 🧠
The four stages of the Flow cycle.
Flow is the mental state of being completely absorbed and focused on the present moment.
It’s the optimal state of consciousness where we perform at our best and feel AMAZING.
Time slows down, our motivation and productivity increase by 500%, and our creativity and innovation go through the roof.
During flow, our brain drinks a cocktail of all the “good” neurochemicals such as norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin, etc.
I may avoid cocktails in my own life, but I’m all for my brain chugging a pint of positive neurotransmitters with the lads.
A major key to getting into flow is understanding the four stages of the flow cycle.
Stage #1 — Struggle: This is when you first sit down to tackle a task and it feels like you’re spinning your tires. Let yourself get a little frustrated. Your body is releasing cortisol and adrenaline to pump up focus and alertness. It helps to remember that struggling is a necessary prerequisite to getting into flow.
Stage #2 — Release: This is where you let go/release whatever it is you are struggling to achieve. Take a short 5–10 minute break and go for a walk or stretch. It’s super important that your release activity gets you out of your mind and into your body. Do not check Instagram or watch Tik Toks during this short break.
Stage #3 — FLOW: Come back to what you were working on and if you struggled and released well, you will enter a flow state. As your brain rips endorphin shots from a mental ice luge, you will experience the euphoric feeling I’ve been blabbing on about. Work will feel like play and you will begin dancing through life.
