The beta-region paradox.
Most people will choose to walk to a restaurant if it’s under one mile away and drive if it’s two miles. From an efficiency standpoint, this is illogical since driving the further distance will be much faster than walking.
In a different context, this explains the phenomenon that people can sometimes recover more quickly from more intense emotions or pain than from less distressing experiences.
