The Three Aspects of Reality
Pain, uncertainty, and constant work
Jonah Hill’s new Netflix documentary about his therapist Phil Stutz is fascinating.
I’m excited that therapy is becoming a more socially acceptable topic to talk about because it can be so beneficial for so many people.
The part that stood out to me the most from the documentary was what Stutz calls the “Three Aspects of Reality.”
They are:
- Pain
- Uncertainty
- Constant Work
The Buddhists had it right
In my estimation, those three aspects added together equal suffering. This is what Buddhists have been telling us for centuries.
What I found curious about these supposed aspects of reality is that in learning them I actually felt relieved.
Why?
Because I have spent so much time trying to perfect my life.
There’s a little voice in my head that tells me that life should be easy and smooth. That if only I was smart enough to “figure it out” (whatever that means), life would flow.
The voice tells me that the struggles I experience are due to my incompetence.
